The most evocative name from this period of BSA's history is undoubtedly the Gold Star, which picked up a pre-war name but from the beginning incorporated post-war engineering advances such as telescopic front forks. Goldies came as 350s from 1947 and then as 500s from 1949, and for most of the 1950s they epitomised the traditional British sporting single. They were outstanding in all forms of competition for more than a decade, and racked up an unbeatable dozen wins on the Isle of Man between 1949 and 1956. The Goldie was of course very closely related to the standard BSA singles of the day, the B31 350 introduced in 1945 and the B33 500 which arrived a couple of years later. The 350 was always the more popular model, however, and spawned a lighter competitions variant called the B32, with more ground clearance and a high-mounted exhaust. Perhaps the 500s were too closely associated with the sidecar market, although BSA did cater for that separately with the M33 500 introduced in 1948, which was basically a pre-war design with girder forks and a side-valve engine. More modern designs arrived with the C15 in 1958, a 250 with unit-construction engine and gearbox which replaced the none-too-successful C11 model after a decent interval of four years. Much more adaptable and a better road bike, this one was developed into successful trials and scramble models. The 1960s opened with BSA posting record profits, but the new models introduced during that decade failed to keep pace with the ever-improving Japanese opposition. The BSA singles covered in this book therefore represent in many respects the golden age of the type, and they are quite rightly revered by today's enthusiasts.
